Print and mail a MFJ return.

Taxpayers whose spouses died during the tax year are considered married for the entire year,
provided they did not remarry. The surviving spouse is eligible to file as Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately

Very sorry for your loss.    Not sure if you mean that you filed an original 2023 return with some other filing status and then amended it to file married filing jointly for 2023.   But if your spouse died in 2023, you are entitled to file a joint return for 2023, thereby getting the higher standard deduction for a married couple---which makes more of your income "tax free."   If you are having trouble e-filing the return, file it by mail.

For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $27,700 (+ $1500 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have qualifying dependent children you will be able to file as a qualifying surviving spouse  (QSS) for the next two years after this tax return.  Post back if you need further help.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

What do you mean, it was "rejected"?  If you e-filed an original return, and then e-filed an amended return, the AGI you used (from the previous year) would not have changed.

How did you file originally and why are you trying to amend?

If you are correct, that you should be filing a joint return, and you need to amend it, but it is being rejected, simply print the amended return, sign form 1040-X and form 1040, and mail it to the IRS.
