Unable enter IRA recharacterization explanation info into Turbo Tax Home & Business 2025 for Mac OS

I am trying to enter the following information in the the IRA explanation statement for why my spouse and I re-characterized our 2025 traditional IRA contributions to become Roth IRA contributions in the Easy Step entry of Turbotax Home & Business 2025 for Mac OS. My spouse and I performed matching transactions in our IRAs so they match each other:

Date of original contribution: Jan 29, 2025 (only I have been able to type this. For my spouse, I am unable to type here)

Date of the recharacterization: (I am unable to type anything using my keyboard for myself or my spouse)

The amount recharacterized: $7000 (auto entered from a prior step

The amount transferred (recharacterization plus earnings or losses: (I am unable to type anything using my keyboard for myself or my spouse)

Reason for recharacterization: (My wife and I were both able to type a two-sentence reason for ourselves here)

I tried changing the Turbotax interface to "Form" entry mode, but I still am unable to type anything for date of recharacterization or the amount transferred.

Has anyone else stumbled across this issue? If I go to form entry mode, is it possible to override things here so I can type the recharacterization date and amount transferred manually?

Unable enter IRA recharacterization explanation info into Turbo Tax Home & Business 2025 for Mac OS

If you cannot type in the fields via the Step-by-Step (EasyStep) interview, follow these steps to manually force the entry:

  1. Enter Forms Mode: Click the Forms icon in the top right corner of the TurboTax window.
  2. Locate the Statement: In the left-hand sidebar (the list of forms), look for "IRA Explanation" or "Recharacterization Statement." If you don't see it, look for Form 8606 (Titled "Nondeductible IRAs") for you or your spouse.
  3. Find the Trigger: Often, the explanation statement is a "supporting worksheet" attached to the IRA Contribution Worksheet.
  4. Perform the Override: * Click on the field you want to edit (e.g., Date of Recharacterization).
  5. If it still won't let you type, go to the Edit menu at the very top of your Mac screen and select Override (or press Command + D).
  6. The field will turn red, indicating you have manually entered the data.

Note: Overriding usually prevents you from e-filing in some software versions, but for "Explanation Statements" (which are text-based attachments), it typically does not trigger an e-file block.

Why is this happening?

There are two common reasons for this specific behavior on Mac:

  1. The "Double-Click" Bug: On the Mac version, some text boxes require you to click once to select the field, then wait a second, then double-click to activate the cursor.
  2. Worksheet Dependency: TurboTax often "locks" fields if it expects that data to be pulled from a different worksheet. For your spouse, it may not be allowing the date because the "Spouse's IRA Contribution Worksheet" hasn't been fully "initialized" by the software's logic yet.

A "Clean Slate" Workaround

  1. If the override feels too messy, many users find success by:
  2. Deleting the IRA entry entirely for the spouse.
  3. Going to the Forms list and deleting the IRA Contribution Worksheet (Spouse) and Form 8606 (Spouse).
  4. Returning to Step-by-Step and re-entering the contribution from scratch. Often, the second pass "unlocks" those stubborn text fields.

Requirements for the Statement

  1. Just to ensure your manual entry is IRS-compliant, the IRS requires the following for a recharacterization statement:
  2. The amount of the original contribution.
  3. The date of the original contribution.
  4. The amount transferred (the original $7,000 +/- earnings/losses).
  5. A statement that you are electing to recharacterize the contribution.
  6. Quick Tip: If the software remains truly "stuck," you can technically e-file without the statement and the IRS will rarely flag it as long as your Form 8606 correctly reflects the final status of the contribution—but it is always better to include the statement to avoid a "Request for Information" letter later.
