Turbotax screwed me over?

TurboTax notified me that my 2020 Federal tax return was accepted when I filed electronically, but IRS says they have no record. How can I get TurboTax to help me?

Turbotax screwed me over?

@blancaneaux

Once TurboTax give you an ACCEPTED message, there's nothing more TurboTax can do for you.

You'll have to make the decision whether to file again on paper via US Mail.

Turbotax screwed me over?

@blancaneaux - according to the IRS website, they are still processing 2020 tax returns,...I would 'sit tight' for 3 more months before contacting the IRS....they are in the process of hiring 10,000 people and I suspect that in 3 months some of these backlogs may be resolved.

The IRS is opening mail within normal timeframes and all paper and electronic individual refund returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.

As of May 20, 2022, we had 9.8 million unprocessed individual returns which include returns received before 2022, and new tax year 2021 returns. Of these, 2 million returns require error correction or other special handling, and 7.8 million are paper returns waiting to be reviewed and processed.

How is the IRS saying that?   Did you speak to a live agent at the IRS, or are you referring to the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool?

Do you have an IRS online account?

By the way, there is a new feature at the IRS WMR tool, which allows you to look up refund information for the current tax year being filed and also the prior two tax years.   Are you selecting 2020?

  • Select the tax year in question.
  • Be sure you enter the correct SSN and filing status.
  • Be sure you are using only the Federal refund amount.   Do not include any state refund or any total refund or net refund (Fed and State) that TurboTax may have provided on a screen.
  • Look at your actual 2020 Federal return to get the Federal refund amount, i.e., your 2020 Form 1040, Line 35a.

"Are you selecting 2020?"

Do you actually think this person - or any person - is not checking the 'tax year" selection (required)  correctly ??

"TurboTax notified me that my 2020 Federal tax return was accepted when I filed electronically, but IRS says they have no record. "

So the OP filed the return more than 6 months ago if they efiled by 10/15/21 ... if they got a confirmation that the return was accepted for processing by the IRS then all they can do is continue to check the IRS site.

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then a date for Sending will be available on the IRS website.   Turbotax is not able to assist you any longer ... they are out of the loop once your return has been filed successfully.

See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Only the IRS controls when and if a tax refund is Approved and Sent.

Call the IRS:  1-800-829-1040  hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info).  Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.

Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".

Then press 3 "for all other questions."

Then press 2 "for all other questions."

- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don’t enter anything.

- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Then press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.

Then press 4 for all other inquiries.

It should then transfer you to an agent.

Or you can contact your local IRS office.  See this IRS website for local IRS offices - http://www.irs.gov/uac/Contact-Your-Local-IRS-Office-1 or call 1-844-545-5640 to set up an appointment

Or you may want to contact a Taxpayer Advocate in your area.  See this IRS website for Taxpayer Advocate in your area and a toll free number - http://www.irs.gov/Advocate/Local-Taxpayer-Advocate

Did you e-File before Tax Day?

or did you e-File in October?

Regardless, if you e-Filed, your status should show on "Where's my refund" page shortly after filing.

It is paper-filed returns that are experiencing the backlog.

Note: if IRS finds that you filed twice, IRS will mark your return "duplicate returns filed" and this will cause further delay.
