Tax Year Prior to 2020: Turbo Card and Coronavirus Stimulus

@charles757710, You are absolutely correct! As long as the routing number and account number on your 1040 match the routing and account # on your turbo card, there should be no problem receiving the stimulus on the card. The Green Dot debit cards are set up to receive employer payroll direct deposit. There is an account attached to the card. Like you said, the automated deposit system the IRS is going to use only needs a VALID routing number and a VALID bank account attached to it in order for the money to be deposited. I am only speaking from my experience working in banking, but that is all I did-check the routing and account number on my 1040, it matched my turbo card, I'm all set.

I may be wrong here. But I assume our tax money doesn't go directly to the Turbo card from the IRS. It goes to a Turbo tax bank account where it is then distributed to our turbo cards. I assume this because we got the $2000 advance this year. That 2k(plus filing fee) was taken BEOFRE my taxes hit my turbo card. That leads me to beleive that the money goes somewhere else prior to hitting my card

I was just curious if it was going to revert to a paper check. There is no action for me to take to be doing at my own risk. I am unable to change anything....I was just curious if anyone knew anything about it

You are exactly right mine isn’t a turbo card it’s an emerald card from h&rblock but my husband used to have his check directly deposited on it.

We are still waiting for IRS guidance regarding updating or providing direct deposit information for the stimulus payments and how they will be distributed to these type of accounts. We will have more information once the government finalizes the details.

@berger87, check the second page of your 1040. Look at the direct deposit information, there will be a routing number and account number. Compare it to your Turbo card routing and account number. This will tell you if a 3rd party financial institution came in to play. But, if it matches your Turbo Card account and routing, there is no reason I see that would make it so the funds don't go on the  card. I AM NO EXPERT, this is just what I know and understand about banking from working in the field for 5 years.

I wish I could dislike what these expert turbo employees keep coping and pasting. Maybe they aren’t even real people who knows. Sounds like robots with no opinion

The answer to your question is that the IRS has not provided guidance or  regulations on how, or if  the stimulus payments can be deposited to a 3rd party.  This  link IRS Coronavirus Tax ReliefTurboTax Corona Virus Tax Center Updates" has the most recent updates provided by the IRS.

When using the Turbo card for the refund it actually supplies a routing and checking account number to the IRS not a debit card number. So I would think it would be ok. Also my NYS refund was DD to my checking account so would the IRS  have that info as well?

The IRS would not have your NYS information.

I can see lots of potential problems for people who received a refund on a Turbo Card.  For example, they may have thought of it as a one time use card, and disposed of it after transferring or using the funds on it, or they may have lost it or damaged it.
