dependents over the age of 16 are not eligible for stimulus - see red below
A1. Generally, if you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien, you will receive an Economic Impact Payment of $1,200 ($2,400 for a joint return) if you (and your spouse if filing a joint return) are not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a Social Security number valid for employment and your adjusted gross income (AGI) does not exceed:
You are not eligible for a payment if any of the following apply to you:
And.....if you are asking if you get a stimulus payment for yourself because you claimed an elderly dependent you do not. You do not receive stimulus money for dependents who are older than 16,
so if I not claim my father as a dependent this year he can claim his stimulus checks and that would give us more money?
NO!!!
if he CAN be claimed on your taxes, then whether or not you claim him is immaterial. He is not eligible.
if he is eligible to be your dependent, you have the option to claim him or not - the IRS doesn't care.
but he doesn't have that option. if he CAN be claimed, he isn't eligible for the stimulus. there is a question on his tax return that asks CAN he be claimed by others? the question is not WAS HE claimed by others.
see the difference?
read closely what I highlighted in RED
if you may be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return you are not eligible for the stimulus
it doesn't say if you weren't claimed
If he can be LEGALLY claimed as a dependent then he is not eligible for the stimulus EVEN if you do NOT claim him as a dependent.
Under the CARES Act, if a person is claimed, or qualifies to be claimed, as a dependent on someone else’s return, he cannot receive a stimulus check, in 2020.
If he qualified as a dependent for 2019, but will not for 2020, he will most likely get it in 2021, by filing a 2020 tax return. This is unlikely to apply to an older parent as a dependent, but is a common occurrence for college age dependents.
