Separate filing

I filed my federal taxes through another service. Is it possible to only file my state taxes through TurboTax?

Separate filing

Yes. When it comes time to send returns it presents separate windows for Federal vs State asking if you want to efile or not. When it asks about Federal just choose the non-efile option.

TurboTax does not have a standalone State program.

You would need to complete the federal tax return using TurboTax.  The federal information flows to the state tax program and then state tax return can be completed.  If the Federal tax return has already been e-filed and accepted by the IRS then you cannot e-file another federal tax return with your name and SS number.  Since the federal return cannot be e-filed, the state tax return cannot be e-filed, it must be printed and mailed to the state.

Additionally, if you are not eligible to use the Free online edition because of the tax data you are entering on the federal return, you would have to upgrade to the Deluxe online edition or higher.  The fee for the Deluxe online edition is $60 and the state tax return is an additional $50.  So a minimum of $110 to complete a state return using TurboTax.

Completing the state tax return using the same service you used to complete the federal return would be the best way to file the state return.

Or go to your state department of revenue website and they may have a free state e-filing program available.

Not easily.  The state returns are created using information from your Federal return, so you would essentially be re-creating your Federal return in order to generate the state return.

Take a look at the following TurboTax article for further information and advice:  Can I prepare and file just my state return using TurboTax?

+1

I was thinking of the options I saw when filing but, in my case, I had filled out the Federal information as well.
