Schedule 8812

Last year I filed with claiming my daughter and so I received the Advanced Child Care Tax Credit.
This year I am not claiming her, my boyfriend will (his daughter too). When I try to finish my taxes a schedule 8812 popped up.  We only live in the US. Do not own property anywhere else.
how do I fill out this section? I know I have to report what I received for the child credit. Is this where I do that? And would I say in that schedule that it is for 1 child, or 0 because im not claiming her this year.

Schedule 8812

Yes, this is where you enter that information.  You should have received a Letter 6419 from the IRS showing how much you received and for how many children.  This section should match that letter. You should enter the amount you received and that it was for 1 child because you are trying to match this section to the amount you received.  TurboTax will correctly report the amounts you can claim based on your 2021 entries.

You can review Letter 6419 for more information.

Schedule 8812

I did not receive a letter 6419.
And to verify, I still enter the number of dependents as 1 even though I am not claiming her this year?

Schedule 8812

Yes, you still enter 1 in this section because the IRS was basing the advanced child tax credit payments based on the belief you were going to claim one child this year. If you did not receive Letter 6419, you can create an account on IRS.gov. They will have a record of advanced child tax credit payments made to you to verify that your records of what you received match theirs. Any discrepancy can result in a delay in processing your return. Generally speaking, if your child was under 6, you received up to $300 / month for 6 months or $1,800. If she was over 6 years old you received up to $250/month for a total of $1,500.

Since you are not claiming your daughter this year, you may have to repay the advanced child tax credit you received. However, if your income is below certain thresholds, you are protected from having to repay that amount. The repayment protection depends on your filing status and begins to be reduced at these amounts:

  • $60,000 if you are married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower;
  • $50,000 if you are filing as head of household; and
  • $40,000 if you are a single filer or you are married and filing a separate return.

TurboTax Online will automatically apply the repayment protection if you are eligible for it.
