Tax Year Prior to 2020: Receieved 1099-MISC, but I'm not self-employed

I received a 1099-MISC form this year for the first time and was confused as to what it even was and why I got it. We have a rewards program at work where we earn points to "cash-in" for goods and after research, this is where the 1099 is from. However, I never received any kind of money and I am not self-employed in any way. I tried to file it with my taxes through Turbo Tax, but the section kept asking me questions as if I'd money and that I couldn't answer. So, what do I even do? Do I need to file even? Can I file separately?

What box on the 1099-MISC is the income reported in?
What version of TurboTax are you using? (Online? Desktop?)

What flavor of Turbotax are you using? (Premier? Deluxe? Home & Business? Self-Employed? Basic?)

The dollar amount is in the "other income" box.

You have to report the value of the items you received through your employers "Cash-in" program. That is why you received a 1099-MISC. You  will be report this on Form 1040 Schedule 1 Line 8 other income.  To enter your "cash in" follow these steps.

  • With TurboTax open select  Wages & Income.
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income and select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  • On the next page, select Other reportable income
  • On the page, Other Taxable Income enter Employer Cash In Program in the description.

This will put the income on Schedule 1 Line 8 of your  Form 1040, as required by the IRS.  You will pay state and federal income tax on the amount, but it will not be subject to self-employment tax.

Oh boy. Can this be filed after my taxes? I've already filed.

Yes, you can file it after but that means you may have to amend your return. You will now have to wait until your tax return is processed and then you will go back to your TurboTax account and amend your tax return by including the 1099 Misc you just received. However, amended tax returns cannot be e-filed. Follow the instructions for details on how to amend your taxes:

One last question, actually:

Will I be charged for amending the filing? I actually already paid the $40 to upgrade the filing and file the 1099, but because I could not figure it out, I went ahead anyway without filing it and still was charged the extra $$.

You will not be charged to file the amended return.

If you are getting a refund you need to wait until you have received the funds.  You will need to follow the steps on How do I amend my 2019 TurboTax Online return?
