Hi,
I don't know what it is about TT online this year but I keep seeming to hit issues. Under "Other Tax forms" in "Uncommon tax situations". I reported a couple of overseas accounts. When I "revisited" it a couple of days later there was no information retained - even though I have completed all steps the first time around. So I input all the information all over again. I then logged out and logged back in to check the information I'd entered had been retained. It was still there so I assumed I'd made a mistake the first time around. This was about 7 days ago. When I revisited it again today, again the information I'd previously inputted was no longer there. Please help. I am near ready to file my returns and I don't want to file them with this information (ie the relevant forms) missing. Thank you Richard

@AmyC you helped my on another issue I thought was a bug, maybe you can help me on this one. I did do a screen share with a LIVE specialist (12 year experience) and they understood the issue and couldn't explain it.
It is being reported to investigations. Meanwhile, if you have a foreign digital wallet, that is also considered a foreign asset and is now reportable with your other foreign assets.
I appreciate the confirmation that this is being looked into. Thank you @AmyC
@AmyC when I logged back in today the all the information had gone again. The issue seems not to be immediate, but happens after a couple of days. Does TT have a suggested work around?
The short term workaround - which is by no means a fix - is to enter the data and then go straight to filing.
You will be able to view the forms that are being sent before they go - check to make sure that the data that you entered is there before you hit send. If it is then you can go ahead and file and save the pdf of your final return.
If the data is not in the forms then do not send them and you will be stuck waiting for a permanent fix.
Hello Robert,
I have experienced the same problem (that Form 8938 is not saved, and cannot be found when I log in again later).
I am not sure that the short term workaround you suggested is acceptable to the IRS, since there is no way to prove that the efiled return included the duly completed Form 8938 and avoid paying the harsh penalty for failing to report foreign financial assets.
This same problem (of Form 8938 not being saved in the Online version of TT) was reported by several users in 2020 and 2021. Would you know why TT has not corrected this issue, i.e. why TT cannot save this particular form?
Same is happening to me :(
@davesugden while I started this string, I am not having the issue this year. I had assumed the TT had fixed the bug for the online version. I keep checking and the data has held after making changes to other sections (last year this seemed to trigger TT to drop the 8939 data) and its holding. I've also periodically printed/viewed all forms under the tax tools section (bottom left of left hand col on each page) and I see the form. The only bug I see is if I click the "Done with Income" button at the bottom of the "Wages and Income" section TT tries to take me through the steps to submit details of Foreign Accounts even though I've already submitted them. I just back out of this and navigate to other sections using the menu on the left hand bar.
Last year, the "work around" for me was to submit the data once everything else was done and just before you go through the "Review" phase. HOWEVER, if the Review phase requires you update another section, and it often does, then I lost the 8939 data again. So after each change I made, required by the review stage, I went to check the 8939 data and added it again if lost. I had to do this several times, it was incredibly frustrating, but once I made every correction required by the review section and then checked/added the 8939 data for the last time it held and I then immediately file (i did a quick print/view forms check before filing).
Perhaps the only thing I did differently this year is I went straight to "1099-OID, Foreign Accounts" section under Wages & Income and submitted the data that populated 8939, rather than waiting for TT to prompt me, but I can't think that made the difference in terms of the data holding.
...apologies for typos, I mean for "8938" of course.
Thanks for the tips. It's incredibly frustrating.
Hi has anyone had similar experience with the desktop version of TurboTax? Does it have the same defect?
