Can you describe the issue here? I don't know what line 12b would have to do with the 8889.
Ran into the same problem when taking the Federal Standard Deduction and itemizing Arizona State. Tech support stated that this is a known problem but don't have a estimated resolution date.
There are two different areas of concern- one is the information automatically entered on 1040SR line 12b. If you take the standard deduction and are filing jointly this number should be $600, but the autofill inserts $300. The program catches it on the review. Once number is manually inserted the system is fine. However it will revert back to the $300 just as soon as you close it.
Form 8889 does not auto fill the top part of the form which results in errors. 2020 Turb tax did auto fill.
The two items are only related by software concerns. line 12b was confirmed as a problem turbotax is working on. Form 8889 does not populate the necessary areas to avoid error messages like it did for the 2020 tax forms. `An accountant friend told me not to enter line W from W-2 because it did not reach the top threshold where it would be subject to taxes.
"Form 8889 does not populate the necessary areas to avoid error messages like it did for the 2020 tax forms."
I don't know what messages you are referring to, but the 8889 is filled out by TurboTax based on your entries. Please tell us what these messages are, and we can see what they indicate.
"An accountant friend told me not to enter line W from W-2 because it did not reach the top threshold where it would be subject to taxes."
This is incorrect. You must enter the code W amount in box 12 on the W-2 so that form 8889 will be properly completed. You are required to have an 8889 for each spouse who has an HSA if there were contributions into or distributions out of that HSA. Entering the code W amount is one way to trigger the creation of the 8889.
I believe that your accountant friend was trying to say that your contributions would not exceed the annual HSA contribution limit. That may be true, but you need to complete the 8889 by going through the HSA interview in any case.
