Payment voucher issue

I filed a Federal return, then made an amendment to my Federal return, then filed again. I owed a bit more tax after the amendment. I have two payment vouchers - one from the original return, then another voucher for an additional $147 tax owed after the amended return. However, the two amounts DO NOT add up to the "total tax owed" on my final amended return - it is off two dollars - can I get a corrected voucher, or should I just cross-out and correct the amount on the voucher and send payment that matches my return?

Payment voucher issue

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X.

Payment voucher issue

I'm sorry, I don't understand. With my amended file, I have a payment voucher of $147. This is additional tax I owe after corrections. With my original Federal Filing, I owed $8586, and a payment voucher for that.

Adding those numbers together, I would owe a total of $8733?

On my actual amended federal return (which was accepted) it lists a final tax owed of $8739. I don't understand the $6 difference.

I am worried about paying the amounts on the two vouchers, then still owing $6, which would further complicate things. Thanks.

Yes, you can just cross out the amount on one of the vouchers and write the correct total amount since this will be the first payment you have made.

The difference of $6 in the total tax is due to an underpayment penalty. Any time you owe more than $1000 when you file your return, an estimated penalty for underpayment is assessed.

The amended return is assumed to be filed after April 18, but I assume you wil pay the total due before then. You can make your payment for $8733. If the IRS thinks you owe more than, they will bill you.
