I am working with TurboTax 2020 which I downloaded from their website on my new computer. It is asking me for info from my 2019 forms. When Geek Squad set up the new computer, they brought over the files from the old computer. I have all my old TurboTax files which were CD downloads, but I cannot open them. I was told there is an app (?) from TurboTax which helps you do this. I asked the live help line, but the info they sent did not answer the question. Help. Thanks.

there is no app that can open every year's .tax YYYY file. each year stands on its own.
"I have all my old TurboTax files which were CD downloads". if you are referring to the apps, only 2017-2019 can be reinstalled and updated. years prior to that can be installed but can't be updated nor are state returns available for those years. for example, if you were to reinstall 2016 and open the .tax2016 file the numbers could very easily change from what was actually filed.
with the desktop software, the only place the .taxYYYY files exist is on your computer. so did Geek Squad bring them over to the new computer? id f so, where did they put them? the normal place is in the Turbotax document folder but it probably didn't exist on the new computer.
If you have the .tax files and don't have or can't install the programs, You could try the TaxPrinter service to convert a .tax file to pdf at
They might be expensive and it is probably not safe to email tax returns back and forth. They are not related to Turbo Tax.
Open TurboTax on your desktop
Select Start A New Return
If you have the .tax file from last year on your computer Select browse and then select the 2019 tax file. The extension will say .tax
Your information from 2019 will be imported into the 2020 software.
If you are needing the 2019 software to save the pdf as a .tax file please contact Customer Support and explain the issue. They can send you a download for the 2019 software at no charge.
