I Live in NJ and work. This year, I have filed federal returns by mail upon filling in turbo tax and seperate ITIN application (W-7 form) for my spouse. I'm unsure if I will receive ITIN before the April 15, 2025, deadline. So, do I need to file an extension with the NY/NJ state tax return until I receive ITIN .?. Also, can I e-file my NY/NJ state tax return in turbo tax once my federal filing is accepted? Please advise.

For New Jersey:
If you have applied to the IRS, but have not received a Taxpayer Identification Number by the return due date, you will need to provide a copy of Form W-7 when you file your New Jersey return. You also could consider filing an extension, and submit your return once you receive your identification number. If you choose to file an extension, remember that there is no extension of time to pay the tax due. You must meet the eligibility requirements for your extension to be granted. See State of NJ - Division of Taxation - (Federal Form W-7) - NJ.gov
New York had no guidance, but you should be able to file with APPLIED FOR in the space for her social security number.
You will not be able to file your New York or New Jersey tax return by e-file with Turbotax because you must e-file your federal tax return with TurboTax (TurboTax is not allowed to e-file just a state).
Can I file an extension for both states in Turbo Tax? I will later mail the state tax return once the ITIN is approved.
You must file a New York state extension (Form IT-370-PF) by April 15, 2025.
The extension gives you until October 15, 2025 to file. However, if you owe, make sure to pay by April 15, 2025 to avoid penalties and interest, either by paying with your extension or by going to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website.
In TurboTax:
For NJ, print and mail Form NJ-630 by April 15, 2025 to to avoid penalties and interest, either by including a check with your form submission or by paying online when you e-file your extension.
