Need to convert paper file to e-file for 2021

Hi,

I need to convert my 2021 paper filing to e-file and file again (because IRS suggested if I couldn't find my tax filing info by now I should refile). I have the .tax2021 file ready. Is there a way that I could do that?

I know you can upload previous years' tax file in Turbotax online but I couldn't find any place to "upload for this year" or " starting from a tax file"? Is it possible to do so? I really don't want to go through tax filing again.

Also, I bought my turbotax premier desktop version from Costco. But now I lost my download link and Costco refused to give me a new one. Is it possible to retrieve it from Turbotax? I believe there should still be e-file slot left there.

Thank you.

You may not be able to eFile as deadlines have passed.

Oct 17th Last day to “timely file” an initial return for which an Extension has been previously requested

Oct 18th TTOnline will be turning away new or not started customers

Oct 22nd Last day to “timely file” a perfected/amended (previously rejected) return for which an Extension has been previously requested.

Oct 31st TTOnline will start turning away all TY21 filings,

    • TY20, TY21 Amend will still be open for entitled users.
    • TY19 Amend will shutdown
    • EF Rejected users can still fix and resubmit

Nov 15th - All customers will be turned away for TY21

Nov 30th TTLive Full Service Amended returns end

Thank you for the clear deadlines. So I guess I shouldn't buy online version even if I want to refile. Probably safer to just mail another copy of paper file.

I did that last year and the second paper file got processed within 1 month. Very strange.

The IRS Operations During COVID-19 web page suggests that you should resubmit your tax return if after six months Where's My Refund does not yet have any information.  However, as of a few weeks ago the IRS was still around 6½ months behind in transcribing paper-filed tax returns, so you should probably not resubmit until at least 7 months have passed from the time you mailed your tax return.

If Where's My Refund shows Processing, your tax return has been transcribed and there is no need to resubmit.

Thank you for your reply. I couldn't find my status in Where's My Refund. Does that mean my file was lost? That's what got me worried and consider refile.

And no you can't move your .tax2021 to Online.  You can only transfer it into next year 2022.  Sorry.   If you mailed your return prepare for a long wait.  It might take 9 months or more.  The IRS is behind on updating their website. The IRS is taking a long time this year.   All you can do is be patient and keep waiting.

Worse example:  It took IRS, Ogden, 14 months to process a set of returns I submitted and then had to retract the claim of late payment, retract the imposition of penalty and interest, and instead pay interest on the period they failed to credit the refund.

The question here is in regard to a 2021 tax return.  The IRS claims to be redistributing the workload among the processing locations, so that might suggest that the present processing delay is similar at the various processing locations.
