Turbotax does not have worksheets to arrive at the amounts that are recorded in box 24a and 24b to trace back to; how do arrive at the correct amounts? I received an error based on TurboTax calculations and received an error code that the amount was higher and needed to be corrected, but I need to understand how to correct it and don't have any guidance in Turbotax.

The 24a and b amounts should be carried over from the other state tax return that you have prepared showing what tax you paid in another state.  If there is an error then you need to go back to the non-resident returns that you have prepared and check to make certain that they are completed before you do your New York resident return.

It doesn't tell me what amount I should be looking for to carry the amounts over? What am I carrying over and from where?

Are you filing any nonresident returns?   What other states?   Or are you just filing the NY resident return?

When I enter in the amounts that I paid "Taxpayer" from my W2 the message I get is: Tax Amount - TP should not be greater than the tax imposed by other state, however, this is the amount that TurboTax entered and I'm not sure where the software is getting this information from.

Apologies, NYS and NJ State as a nonresident

24a is asking for the amount of tax paid to the state of NJ - Look for Total Tax on the NJ nonresident return.   The amount should be on LIne 49 of your NJ 1040-NR.
