I have been using TurboTax yo do our family taxes for probably a decade and a half and have always found the dialogues all-encompassing and the calculation accurate - which brings me to the ITS's reaction to my 2021 TurboTax Deluxe submission.
Everything seemed to be moving along quite satisfactorily until, in November 2022, my wife and I received an IRS refund c heck for more than $4,300 when 2021 TurboTax Deluxe calculated $1,079 taxes dues, which we had paid prior to 4/18/22.
A few days later, we received a CP12 that said the IRS had "found an error" which affected our Tax Credits and that they had "...changed your return to correct these errors. As a result, you are due a refund."
In the "Billing Summary", they show an overstatement of "Payments you made" and a decreased "Tax you owed". Not wanting to cash their check and incur future interest and penalties on it and not wanting the declare this year the $113.37 in interest they added to the refund, I went into a nearby IRS office for a one-on-one meeting. I requested that the agent print out the forms the IRS altered forms they created for me (first as evidence of their errors and second as my new source documents of my 2021 filed return). He printed 2 documents: first, a Wage and Income Transcript; and, second, a Tax Return Transcript. The former at least confirmed that they left my 1099-R and 1099-Int reporting alone. The latter gave no form/schedule numbers nor their corresponding line numbers, leaving me as in the dark as when I first entered the doors. The agent seemed determined that he had delivered everything I need to determine how the IRS had 1) come up with giving us $5,000 more than what we deserved and 2) what changes the IRS had made.
Please, do I have a right for the IRS to explain what they did and why? Do I have a right to see the forms they altered with an explanation as to why they were altered? The agent I met with left me with the impression that it was my responsibility to figure it out.
