Look at a copy of your federal return to see if Form 6251 (Alternative Minimum Tax) was generated.  If it was, enter any amounts for the items on the AMT screen in your MN return.

If a Form 6251 was not generated in your federal return, just ignore the questions on the MN Alternative Minimum Tax screen and click Continue.

Hi,  I am using the wizard questions and do not see any of the forms behind the scene.  How can I verify that form 6251 was/will not be generated?  Thanks

MN is only asking you to enter three things from Form 6251, if it is in your return:

  • Non-Minnesota portion of the interest from private activity bonds reported on federal Form 6251
  • Intangible Drilling Costs
  • Depletion

If you are using TurboTax Online, you can look at the list of forms in the Delete Form feature, just to see if Form 6251 is listed.  To do this:

  1. While in your return, click on Tax Tools > Tools (in the black bar at the side of your screen).
  2. In the Tools Center, under Other helpful links click on Delete a form.
  3. You will see a list of forms -- see if Form 6251 is included on the list.
  4. If it isn't, just ignore the Alternative Minimum Tax screen in the MN interview.

If you return does contain Form 6251, you can preview/print the form using these steps:

Turbo Tax Online

  1. Click on TaxTools > Print Center in the black bar at the side of your screen.
  2. On the TurboTax Print Center  screen, click Print, save or preview this year's return.
  3. Mark the box for 2019 federal returns
  4. Select Just my tax returns.
  5. Click on the  View or print forms box.

TurboTax CD/Download

You can view/print the form in Forms Mode:

  1. Go into Forms Mode by clicking on the Forms icon in the top right of the blue bar.
  2. In the Forms in My Return list on the left, click on Form 6251. It will appear on the right.  You can see if it contains the items the MN return is asking for.
  3. Click on the Print box at the bottom of the screen.
  4. To return to the interview, click on the Step-By-Step icon in the top right of the blue bar.

Having the same issue.  I checked, and the form is listed when I look into the software, but I can't seem to find it as a form to be printed... could be a software bug...

If there are no entries on the form or it does not result in AMT then it probably will not be listed to print.
