Use this step, this will put you bak to choosing the paid version and ditching the free version and take you off that loop of asking you to go back to IRS
There is no upgrade button. This is frustrating

Great! Yes, the detailed steps have been provided in this thread at least 3 times. I'm glad they worked for you. Good luck.

The TurboTax IRS Free File Program has no upgrades. That's not how you do it. I assume you found you didn't qualify and wanted to switch from TurboTax IRS Free File Program back to a regular Online TurboTax edition, while keeping the same account and without starting over. The detailed steps are provided in several places in this thread, so I suspect you found them after you posted this comment. I've seen your followup comment in this thread that said your switch was successful. Good news!
THIS WORKS. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks so much for tip to follow the link. That reset mine. I was really stressing. I was using a paid version and was almost done with everything. Finally got the last document almost a month later; it asked me about changing to free and I thought that was odd, but thought maybe TurboTax changed what qualifies for free, so I said yes. Huge mistake and went in circles trying to undo it so I simply pay them and file.
Thank you! Your link worked 🙂
Here are the steps you can use for 2021. I just assisted a customer with switching from freefile to Premier using these steps on 4/29/2021.
1. Go to https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/online/
2. Click "help me choose"
3. Select the options that apply to your situation
4. Click "start for free" of whatever product you want to use when it gives you the suggestions
After that, it asked how I did my taxes last year. Select Turbo Tax, then sign in. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT. Once signed in, click on Personal Info and it will ask if you're sure to want to change to a commercial product and not use the free file program. Select yes, click ok, and you'll be back into the normal system and out of the free file system.
And that like takes me back to where I was. Yeah!!!!
I tried several ways listed in this discussion. Eventually one worked. Forgot which. But keep trying.

This is a confusing thread since it goes back 3 years, is cluttered with multiple users, and has some info from 3 years ago that is no longer true today. I'll tell you the correct method to use in my answer.
You haven't described your situation, but since you are in this thread, I'll assume you are using TurboTax IRS Free File Program and find you don't qualify and want to switch back to regular Online TurboTax in the same account without starting over. My steps below tell how to do that without ending up in that loop. Follow the steps exactly.
Print the following steps out to use for guidance so you can exit this forum.

You used my steps, which I've just reposted for user @ wilpotts
I'm glad they worked for you.

How do I switch from free file to the paid version
