Which state are you trying to e-file?

If considered a state id, then the customer can select that it is a State issued ID, then the state that issued it, the ID #, and then an expiration date (if it has one).

Since a tribal ID is not issued by the tribal government, they may not be considered a state ID.

Tribal ID's are issued by Tribal Governments however, because Tribal ID's are not issued by an official State or other Government Agency or Authority.  When TurboTax Asks for Government ID, it will only accept State issued ID's that are issued by the State Government Dept of Motor Vehicles.

Federally recognized tribal ID are appropriate for taxes in certain instances because it is a W9 recognized ID form for verification.

It's preferable to have a regular state ID because outside Indian Country most other communities don't know that they are federally issued by the Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs.

(And I am too an Federally recognized Native American CDIB holder)

This is an old thread that last had activity more than two years ago until the most recent post.  But to add something in case other users look to this thread for help----it is not required for you to enter a driver's license in order to e-file a federal tax return.  The software asks for a driver's license or state-issued ID in order to add an extra layer of security for you, but the IRS does not require that you enter those.  You can skip entering the driver's license and still e-file your federal return without one.  There are a few states that are picky about e-filing unless you have a state ID, so if you are trying to e-file in one of those very "picky" states, you might end up needing to file the state return by mail if the state will not accept your ID.

As a kind reminder from an actual CDIB Holding Native American that you want to argue with.....

Not all Reservations and Tribal Trust lands have the telecommunication infrastructure to actually efile.   (Pine Ridge and Navajo Nation are prime examples).

Intuit TurboTax has the option to print out and mail the forms in as well- thus, even in 2025 for the 2024 tax year - people will have to submit their Identity along with those packets.

Did you know Dial Up Networking still exists in a large swath of the American Midwest and Southwest because of the lack of Congressional approved & updated telecommunications.

Have a nice day.  And when a federally recognized tribal citizenship (me) who understands how the CDIB works both "on and off Rez" puts updated information...try not to dispute it.

We  (I) kinda live with these laws, rules, and regulations.

Have a blessed day.

You can skip entering the driver's license and still e-file your federal return; you are not required to enter it.  @Nathaniel907

The IRS does not require that info to e-file.
