There are over a dozen kinds of 1099's.  What kind are you referring to?   Were you self-employed?  Do you mean a 1099NEC?  Or something else?

No worries, you can still file your taxes for the last two years even if you don't have your 1099 forms. Here’s what you need to do:

IRS Filing Requirements

You generally need to file a tax return if your income exceeds certain thresholds. Here are some key points:

  • You have over $400 in net earnings from self-employment (side jobs or other independent work)
  • Single: $14,600 or more if under 65; $16,550 or more if 65 or older.
  • Head of Household: $21,900 or more if under 65; $23,850 or more if 65 or older.
  • Married Filing Jointly: $29,200 or more if both spouses are under 65; $30,750 or more if one spouse is under 65; $32,300 or more if both spouses are 65 or older.
  • Married Filing Separately: $5 or more.
  • Qualifying Surviving Spouse: $29,200 or more if under 65; $30,750 or more if 65 or older.

You can find more detailed information on the IRS page here

Accessing Your IRS Account to Find 1099s

You can request a transcript of the tax information the IRS has on file for you by accessing your IRS account online. Here’s how:

  • Create or Sign In to Your IRS Account: Visit the IRS website and sign in to your Individual Online Account. If you don't have an account, you can create one.
  • Request Your Transcript: Once logged in, you can view, print, or download your tax transcripts, including information from forms like W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s

Filing Back Taxes with TurboTax

TurboTax allows you to file returns for previous years. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Purchase and Download Software: You need to purchase and download the TurboTax software for the specific years you need to file. You can find the products here.
  2. Enter Your Information: Follow the prompts to enter your income and deductions for the respective years.
  3. Report Income Without 1099s: If you know the amount of income you earned, you can report it without having the physical 1099 forms. In TurboTax, you can enter this income under "Additional Income" or "Miscellaneous Income".
