TurboTax does not pay any type of taxes owed, federal or state.
If you selected to have the federal taxes owed paid by direct debit from your bank account, that information is sent to the IRS. The IRS then debits your account. Since you can only e-file one federal tax return the bank information is only sent to the IRS once. Did you also pay the federal taxes owed in another way, such as on the IRS payment website?
Was the Payee on your bank account noted as IRS USATAXPYMT?
THIS happened to me too!! Woke up this morning with an overdraft. Thank goodness I have the funds to cover my rent etc but that was not a nice way to wake up
TurboTax agent - I paid the IRS myself prior to April 18
Do you have the correct number at the IRS to get that money back? I've been bounced between phone numbers and automated messages all morning. [phone number removed] is not helpful
Hey friend,
First up, thank you for replying to this question so quickly! Appreciate you taking the time 🙂
So I opted to use my debit card and it looks like both charges have already gone through (along with two separate processing fees), but only one charge for the turbotax (TT) services. TT was the only service I used to file this year, but I did go to the IRS website to get access to my tax transcript. Maybe I messed up at that point?
Ugh, I am so sorry you're in that same boat, and I hope you get your refund soon. It's terrible here and no one has been able to take my calls or chats (I mean fair, it is the day after they're due). None of the numbers I have found have worked either, even the tricks to getting directly to an agent have failed.
@jcgengel If these were duplicate federal tax payments then you need to contact the IRS.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
THANK YOU! I so appreciate you taking the time to answer this so thoroughly! I will give this a try. @aluther1, hope this can help you too.
UPDATE: The double payment will apparently rectify itself, according to the lady at the IRS. and they will not be keeping the second payment for 2023 taxes, I asked that specifically.
Keep checking back to your online payments section of your IRS refund/payment account, once the payment is 'posted' or 'processed' on our side of the screen, the process to refund will take place on the IRS side and it will be reflected in this processed section, if it isn't rectified online in x? weeks call them again. No specific time period determined.
PS @DoninGA you are a wizard, thank you
