I paid almost the same percent in taxes in 2019 that I did in 2020 and yet I owe significantly more this year. Why is that?

Without reviewing your income tax return, it would be hard to determine why the amount you owe is significantly more.  

However, here are some factors that could cause the difference:

• You earned more income and are in a higher tax bracket
• You lost credits such as Earned Income Credit or the Child Tax Credit

Again, there are several reasons for the difference.  Compare your 2019 and 2020 returns line by line and see what is significantly different.
