If you want, you could download form 8615 from the IRS website, print out your return and mail both to the IRS. The current expected release date for the form is March 4. While it may be frustrating, it may be faster to wait for the form to be finalized and e-file your return.
Here are the links to the IRS website:
seems the TT programmers are having a long coffee break, the IRS form 8615 is ready
I filed a return with 8615 on March 15 and it was rejected by IRS because of computation errors on this form. When I open TurboTax it tells me to update the software on March 19 (tomorrow) and then e-file again. Still not ready to use 8615!
I had the exact same issue as ronlancaster. Filed on 3/16. Will try again on/after March 19.
An update: I tried again today but there were no updates downloaded for TurboTax. I checked the 8615 and all the values are the same as they were before, and the IRS claims that those values are inaccurate. I guess I'll keep trying until TurboTax downloads an update. I wonder if the online version has the same issue, but I don't want to pay to find out.
One more update. I phoned TurboTax about this problem and I was told to wait a few more days to see if a software update is available.
As it happens, I am a tax preparer for the IRS VITA program, so I prepared the tax using that software. The 8615 form is EXACTLY THE SAME. I'm wondering if the "computation error" is on the IRS computers and not within TurboTax.
I think I will resubmit in a couple of days using TurboTax and see what happens. Maybe it's IRS that needs to fix something.
Final update. Today TurboTax was updated and I resubmitted this return with an unchanged 8615. The return was accepted by IRS in less than an hour.
Great to hear!
Thanks ronlancaster. Mine worked too when I refiled today. I appreciate your updates as I was worried.
Hi Ron, I am using the free version of turbo tax and it not have the updated version of 8615 which allows one to use the parents tax bracket. Which version are you using.
I calculated everything by hand and am seeing huge difference if I am allowed to figure the tax using the parent's tax rate worksheet. 228 dollars vs 2800 dollars.
Also I am using the online version and it does not show any of the calculations. I don't mind paying for the software if it has all the latest update.
Thanks for any help you can give.
I am trying to file my sons return and we are filing Form 8615. We are getting an error message that says:
Wont be able to E-file your return. A form or tax situation, turbo tax doesnt support E-filing. You indicated on form 8615 you are electing to modify tax of unearned income.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Chris
Hi Chris, just saw your message. Sorry could not reply before. I did not use Turbo tax to file my daughter's return. 8615 is colloquially known as the kiddie tax. There were changes made to the kiddie tax law which is very advantageous to ordinary taxpayers.
Most e-filing software does not have the latest changes for 8615 which enable you to calculate the child's tax based on the parent's income.
In my daughter's case taking advantage of the "kiddie tax" law changes made a huge difference. You have several options. Two of those are:
1. Download form 8615 and instructions manually fill it out and mail it. This is complicated but doable.
2. Find a CPA who has software with the latest "kiddie tax" changes.
You could also call turbo tax and see what they say, but I was not able to get a live person because they seem to be short staffed because the coronavirus.
