I've qualified for the Free edition and wonder if this glitch would still exist if I upgraded?  Why would I upgrade to fix a glitch/continuous loop that should be there in the first place?

You may have some item that you are claiming on your return that requires an upgrade.  Only certain items are allowed in the Free edition.
