For most part TT does what’s right but in this case, its not. I am filing MFS and the instructions in state form are very clear for such a situation. TT is expected to ask deduction type since it cannot assume what deduction spouse is taking.
The California standard deduction for married filing separately for 2023 is $5,363
For Kentucky, the standard deduction for individuals is $2,980.
If you enter itemized deductions on the Federal return of less than the standard deduction amount for your state, TurboTax will use the standard deduction for your state.
Please read the whole thread. I suspect no-one is confused by the fact that TT uses the standard deduction when your deductions are below the standard amount. This is about TT giving the user access to and control of the state option similar to the Fed option.
I acknowledge your desire to have the program allow you to make this choice at the state level, and did read the whole thread. I am elevating the issue for consideration for future programming, but I just wanted to leave an actionable suggestion in this thread for now.
Update: Tried TT Desktop as was suggested by a TT Tax Expert over the phone. But that too doesn't support selection of deduction for State. Disappointing - and clearly lack of good tax experts knowledge to understand what's TT is doing outright wrong.
That's more helpful, thank you. I'm sure there are others like me who use TT to evaluate tax planning scenarios and the implications on future taxes. Running TT with alternates scenarios is very useful, but without the option to toggle TT deductions for state taxes limits one's ability to take advatange of TT capabilities. Fixing this would be useful and in TT's best interest. I'm sure the lawyers will be concerned about someone selecting the wrong option and fearing liability for someone not gettijng their "largest refund possible", but I'm sure they can fix the small print as needed and the software can put enough warnings on it to ensure anyone selected the "wrong" choice when actually filing their taxes can't hold TT to blame. Looking forward to TT incorporating this improvement.
Yes, but at least someone has suggested this might be a benefit and is asking someone up the chain at TT to consider fixing it.
My screen does not show the option to not choose itemized deduction on Arizona form 140NR. So how do I select standard deduction?
STILL DO NOT HAVE OPTION TO SELECT STANDARD DEDUCTION ON ARIZONA FORM 140NR EVEN THOUGH FILED STANDARD DEDUCTION ON FEDERAL RETURN. NEED ASSISTANCE FOR THE LAST 4 DAYS WITH NO HELP FROM TURBOTAX
