How to report both W-2 and 1042-S form using Turbo tax free?

Some forms the program will let you upload and attach but not all. If you are not able to upload yours when filing, don't worry. Since you have the form and it is easy to provide - if the IRS asks. The IRS has 2 different portals for easy upload. If you are asked to upload it to the IRS, it is a very simple process. You may not even be asked to upload it.

I have the same issue with the previous fellas, so following this thread has been helpful. However, by adding the amount on that misc form, I get double-taxed. Any help on how to fix this? Thank you!

How to report both W-2 and 1042-S form using Turbo tax free?

If the W2 and 1042-S is reporting the same income, do not report the 1042-S.

How to report both W-2 and 1042-S form using Turbo tax free?

Hello,

My name is Theo, I am an international student living in Maryland, working as a Research Assistant and earning a stipend. Last summer, I participated in an exchange program that led me to conduct research in Illinois, where I also earned a stipend.

I am currently filing my taxes and followed your instructions to report my Illinois income using Form 1042-S. The form indicates that only federal taxes were withheld, with no state tax withheld from Illinois. However, after completing the filing process, I noticed that TurboTax reports I will be receiving a state tax refund from Illinois.

This seems incorrect, and I would appreciate some clarification on why this is happening and what steps I should take next.

I earned a total of $8000 being stipend for two months of research. my 1042-S form shows a federal tax deduction of $2400 but no Illinois state deduction.

How to report both W-2 and 1042-S form using Turbo tax free?

Without being able to see your whole tax return, we could not say why you're receiving an Illinois Refund. Perhaps you overpaid state tax on your W-2?

If you entered your W-2 in the W-2 section, (with any Federal/State tax paid), reported your 1042-S income as Other Reportable Income, and reported your Federal Tax paid on your stipend in the Other Income Taxes Paid in 2024 section, then you have reported correctly.

If you want someone to review your return before filing, here's how to get an Expert Review.

How to report both W-2 and 1042-S form using Turbo tax free?

Thank you so much, @MarilynG1

To clarify, I have a W-2 for Maryland and a 1042-S form for Illinois. My 1042-S indicates a $2,400 deduction for federal tax but no state tax deduction. I followed the provided instructions for reporting the 1042-S on TurboTax, and the results are shown in the screenshot below.

Is this outcome unusual?

It depends. Actually in reviewing your return, you owe the State of Illinois $355. This is not a refund but taxes owed.

Just checking, were you able to download and print Illinois? Did you receive instructions where to mail?
