W2 box d Control number is not needed. See
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/forms/help/i-have-no-box-d-or-control-number-on-my-w-2/00/26469
The control number is not needed to file your tax return. You can leave the control number blank, click Continue and then you will be able to manually enter your w-2 information.
If you get errors when attempting to e-file with an empty Box D, just enter any number in this format: 5 digits, space, 5 digits (for example, 12345 67890). The IRS doesn't care what's in Box D because its use by payroll departments is optional.
On the other hand, if you're trying to import your W-2 with a blank Box D, click skip import and then manually enter your W-2. You won't be able to import using the 5 digit + space + 5 digit solution for e-filing.

It does not have space in between numbers and it keeps saying invalid.

... but I do not want to manually enter my w-2, I want to automatically import my w-2. My payroll provider is ADP. The control number provided is 5 digits, yet the form says it is invalid.
It's just as fast and easy to manually enter a W2. And the import might come in wrong. You could have manually entered it in the time it took trying to import it and posting this question.
To add a W2 just type w2 (small W) in the search box at the top of your return and click on Jump To the W2
OR To Add a W2 enter it under
Federal Taxes on the left side
Wages & Income
Then Wages and Salaries- Click the Start or Update button
Then if you are married you should have 2 buttons...Add w-2 for (taxpayer name) and Add w-2 for (spouse name). Click on the correct button to add a W-2.
Thank you for the most unhelpful reply imaginable
