It is free to file an extension for your federal return in TurboTax. Please see How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868) in the TurboTax CD/Download software? for more information.
Each state has its own rules and requirements regarding filing an extension. Please select your state from the list in this TurboTax help article for instructions: Do I need to file an extension for my personal state taxes?
TurboTax Premier CD/Download and TurboTax Live are two separate products. Click here to view the pricing for TurboTax Live. Thank you! But, can I switch products after the filing deadline?
Maybe you can help me with this as well. - I used my timeshare points to make 4 reservations at 2 vacation resorts in 2 states, NJ and RI. I live in VA. The reservations were listed with Extra Holidays (by Wyndham) and were rented out for 2 or 3 nights each. I received 2 checks from Extra Holidays (located in Orlando, FL), one for each property. After they deducted fees and commissions, I ended up with less than 50%, but received a 1099-MISC for the total amount. I have been trying to figure out how to report the income/expenses from the two properties (which I do not own). I was given different advice by Turbo Tax experts, but no one mentioned anything about having to report non-resident income.
Is that even necessary since, although the resorts were in NJ and RI, I don't own them (just reserved and listed them), and the rental checks came from the rental agency in FL?
If I DO have to report non-resident income, do I report it to NJ and RI, and would I have to file extensions for those states if I file federal and VA state extensions?
This has become way too complicated and, increasingly, not worth the trouble.
Different states has different requirements regarding the extension. What you can do (especially if you are using TurboTax Online) is to add NJ and RI also, prepare the extension, and select any options for state extensions. Some states do not require their own extension, they are okay with the Federal extension. You should get advised accordingly.
Technically speaking, yes you will have to report the income derived from each of those states. It is possible that the income in question is not enough to actually be taxed in the state, but it's hard to know that now. If in doubt, file all applicable extensions to avoid any late-filing penalties. If you think you might owe tax, follow the instructions to make any estimated tax payments to avoid any late-payment penalties.
