Federal Form 5329 does not print explanation why RMD not taken

I typed in why the RMD was erroneously not taken for 2023 during the question portion of the program but when I print the form, TurboTax prints "SEE STMT........RC.....3,932" on line 54 but there is no attached explanation like I typed in the program.  How will the IRS know why with no statement? Or is it only included with e-filing?

Federal Form 5329 does not print explanation why RMD not taken

To confirm you are using TurboTax Desktop and used the steps below to request a waiver:

 

  1. Enter the forms mode and click on "Open Form" and type "5329".
  2. Scroll down to Part IX line 52 and enter the RMD amount that should have been taken. On line 53 enter the amount of the RMD that was actually taken (probably zero if it was missed).
  3. Then in the box right under line 53 "Waiver of Tax Smart Worksheet" enter the same amount as line 52 (the RMD amount). 
  4. Click the "Explanation" button and enter the reason for missing the RMD and your statement requesting a waiver.

 

I cannot create the issue you are experiencing. Can you confirm what pages you are getting when you select to print Form 5329? 

 

When I select to print Form 5329 I see: Form 5329, Smart Worksheets From 2023 Federal Tax Return, and Additional Information From 2023 Federal Tax Return (with the Waiver Explanation).

Yes, I had done all those things.  Still not sure why it didn't print when I first printed a copy to review.  It did end up printing later on with the explanation after I selected print to file.  Unless there is an inconsistency between the two commands, I don't know it wouldn't print the first time.  Thanks for your detailed explanation though.
