When I tried to e-file my son’s tax return, I received a message stating that taxes have already been filed with his SSN and wouldn’t allow me to e-file. What should I do about duplicates of SSN?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Was his information submitted through one of the non-filer applications in order to get his stimulus payment? There are non-filer options either through TurboTax or the IRS.
If so, when using the non-filer system on the IRS website, the information is processed by the IRS as an original filed return.
Any subsequent filing submitted electronically will be rejected and must be mailed to the IRS for processing.
You can do this in a couple of different ways:
Don't forget that when you mail a paper return to the IRS, you must include copies of your W-2s and 1099s, plus you need to sign and date the return.
What is the non-filer application? as far as I know, the only tax return done was by me through Turbo Tax. I filed 2017, 2018 and 2019 returns for him in April 2020 and he has not received his refund or his stimulus check. Should we just refile?
Did you claim him on your return ??? How old is he ? Does he go to college ?
You say you filed the 2017, 2018 & 2019 returns all this past April ? Did you mail in the 17 & 18 returns ?
Yes, and I included W-2's.
No, he is 31 years old and is married. I just did his taxes with turbo tax for him
Should I refile the taxes for 2017, 2018, 2019 again for him?
Hopefully you mailed the 2017 & 2018 returns to the fed & state in separate envelopes ... do NOT mail them again. Mailed in returns are taking months to process due to the Covid shutdown.
As for the 2019 rejection ... all he can do is mail in the return since the SS# has already been thru the system ...
however if he or the wife used one of the "stimulus registration" programs he MUST ...
A58. The Economic Impact Payment’s Non-Filers tool was not intended for use by taxpayers who also needed to file a tax return with the IRS for tax year 2019. If you used the Non-Filers tool to register for an Economic Impact Payment, you cannot now file your tax return electronically. You must complete and print a paper 2019 Form 1040 or 1040-SR tax return, write “Amended EIP Return” at the top, and mail it to the IRS. If you owe tax, you should pay it in full by the July 15 due date. Interest will be charged after July 15 on any amounts that are not paid by July 15. For more information, visit the Amended EIP Return page.
Yes, I sent federal and state returns in separate envelopes. Also, can I decide to have refunds be direct deposit instead of mailed check?
Yes ... in the FILE tab choose to mail in the returns and have the refunds DD ... doing this will present the correct forms to mail + the filing instructions page to populate.
