e-file an emended return for 2024?

Hello!

I had to amend my 2024 tax return because I noticed when I looked over it prior to filing for 2025 that I had neglected to include my 1099-INT form last year. I tried to amend online with TurboTax, it got all the way to the end of amending both my federal and state, but when they went to submit it they told me it couldn’t be e-filed and I had to download the desktop version to do it there. I did the process again, but it had several confusing steps. Towards the end, it told me to press continue to proceed to file my amended state return, but the continue button did not do anything? Eventually I went to “summary” and it congratulated me for completing my amendment process and to hit “exit TurboTax”. It also had me download and PDF for filing purposes but was not clear if it e-filed EITHER my federal or state amended returns, I’m not sure if I now need to mail a print off of that PDF to the IRS (I’ve gathered all necessary documents in order to do so, but is anyone wants to give me a list ill also double check), but I do not know how to do the same mailing process if I have to for my state return. What files do I need to include if I have to mail it in to the state of Michigan? I went to the treasury website and made a payment of the amount I now owe to Michigan ahead of time because that’s what TurboTax’s ai assistant told me I should do since it didn’t tell me how to make that payment during the amendment process. I also put in my bank info for direct deposit during the federal portion, but they still have not billed me 2 days later. I’m not sure if me mailing it in and including a check for what I owe to federal would result in me getting double charged. I have no idea if TurboTax has actually helped me file either of my amended returns and I need help.

e-file an emended return for 2024?

No. It does not appear that your amended 2024 tax return was e-filed if you attempted to e-file after October, 2025, which was the deadline.

Also, amendments are generally free if you used TurboTax to prepare that original return, so I will also address how to request a refund as well.

You will therefore need to mail copies of your tax return to the IRS and to Michigan.

Regarding the copies you will need to mail to both the IRS and Michigan, TurboTax makes the process easy.

Steps to Identify What to Mail:

  • Follow the Print Instructions: When you choose to file by mail (do not select e-file), TurboTax generates a specific, detailed, step-by-step instruction sheet as the first page of your printout. This tells you which forms to include, such as the 1040, schedules, and state-specific forms.
  • Required Documents:Federal (IRS): Sign the Form 1040 and attach copies of W-2s, and any 1099s that show federal income tax withheld.
  • State: Include a signed copy of the state return, copies of W-2s/1099s, and often a copy of your federal 1040.
  • Where to Mail: The instructions page provides the correct mailing address.
  • Assemble Separately: Mail federal and state returns in separate envelopes to their respective addresses, preferrably using certified mail.

You should include a check with any amount owed to federal because the e-file payment was not processed.

However, do not include a payment to Michigan, since you paid that directly online through their website.
