If you need to revisit the Dependents section in TurboTax Online, here's what you do:
My TurboTax was filed and accepted. During initial filing in the series of questions they ask if u have dependent and I do have child lives with me. But next question was “are y claiming this dependent on tax return. I chose “NO”. So does that mean I DID NOT CLAIM HER?? Because her father was going to and his rejected but I specifically entered “NO” to claim her
You can look on your return and see if you did claim the child. On the first page is a section for dependents. Check to see if the child is listed there.
Yes it’s there but when I answered my questions during the process of filing my taxes on TurboTax it asks you “Do u want to claim this dependent on your return”. I put “NO” because I didn’t want to claim her. I only listed her bc she is my daughter she does reside with me but this year her dads going to claim her so that’s why I put NO. I assumed I had to say I had a child living with me.
If you selected "NO" you answered "No, the other parent will NOT claim the child" so the program would have you claim the child.
(please see screenshot below)
If your return was accepted by the IRS, and you are not claiming the child for tax year 2020, the only option you have is to wait until your return has processed and then file an amended return. Chances are you will need to pay back a portion of your refund.
The other parent will not be able to claim the child and e-file this season. The other parent must print and mail their return to claim the child.
In response to screenshot, that’s NOT where I selected NO. I selected NO, when asked will I be claiming my child. The screenshot where it asks “will other parent in agreement with me be claiming” I did PUT “YES”. Oh my gosh I am so confused. But I distinctly remember that part of TurboTax filing when asking about other parent. Is there a way someone can go in and verify that’s in fact what I selected?? Bc her father wants me to amend my taxes but I do not want to do that if I did in fact answer those dependent questions correctly so that he had no issues
Tell the father will need to print and mail his return if you claimed the child and you will need to file an amended return.
At this point that is all you can do.
You can select "Add a State" to get back into your return to review the Personal Info section to review the questions and how you answered them, but you can't change anything until you do an amended 1040X.
The father can also file and NOT claim the child,(allowing him to e-file) and then file an amended return of his own and claim the child on the 1040X.
