Claiming a dependent by mail

CAn you please restate the question? Do you mean you are filing out the forms manually without the use of software?

Claiming a dependent by mail

Your question is unclear--if you are using the TurboTax software, the way you claim a dependent is the same whether you are going to e-file or file by mail.  Your dependents are entered in My Info --you will need to enter the name, date of birth and Social Security number for the dependent.  If you are merely filing on paper and not using any software then look at the Form 1040.  Below your mailing address is the portion in which you enter the information about your dependents.  Fill in the blanks.

How do I add my dependent son

Claiming a dependent by mail

@paladinogayle6   Dependents are added in My Info.  But have you e-filed yet?  Your question lacks details---we do not know what you are trying to do.   Are you trying to add a newborn to your return?  Or did you file and forget to enter a dependent?

The steps to add a dependent are the same whether you are paper-filing or e-filing.  Please follow these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click My Info.
  • At the screen Personal info summary, click Add a dependent for a new dependent or scroll down the screen to find the dependent’s name.
  • TurboTax will ask you simple questions and determine the dependents, tax deductions or tax credits that you are eligible for based upon your answers.

A dependent must meet the requirements of a qualifying child or a qualifying relative in order for you to claim them on your tax return.  The tests for a qualifying child are:

  • Relationship: Must be your child, adopted child, foster child, brother or sister, or a descendant of one of these (grand or nephew).
  • Residence: Must have the same residence for more than half the year.
  • Age: Must be under age 19 or under 24 and a full-time student for at least 5 months. They can be any age if they are totally and permanently disabled.
  • Support: Must not have provided more than half of their own support during the year.
  • Joint Support: The child cannot file a joint return for the year.

The tests for a qualifying relative are:

  • Qualifying Child: They are not the “qualifying child” of another taxpayer or your “qualifying child.”
  • Gross Income: The dependent being claimed earns less than $4,300 in 2020.
  • Total Support: You provide more than half of the total support for the year.
  • Member of Household or Relationship: The person (a friend, girlfriend, non-blood relative) must live with you all year as a member of your household or be related to you.

TurboTax software will ask you simple questions and give you the tax deductions and credits you are eligible for based upon your answers.
