Now that we are married, my husband and I are filing a joint return for 2018. For 2016 and 2017, my husband had charitable contribution carryover due to limits based on his AGI. Can those amounts be brought forward to our 2018 joint return?

When you go down to the Charity section on the Deductions&Credits page, there is a specific area for including charity carryover $$....and his can be included this year. "Charity Donations Carryover from 2017"

1) IF you are using his 2017 Online account to start your 2018 new MFJ tax file (if you are using Online software) then that information should automatically transfer into this year's file.
2) IF you are using the desktop software, and transferred in his 2017 file as a starting point, then that information should automatically transfer into this year's desktop file.
3) IF you are using a) your own Desktop file, or Online account as the starting point, or b) if you are starting a completely new account or file without any 2017 file transfer, then you'll have to add in that information manually. To do that, you will need his tax file forms from last year...and may even need his full extended printout, with all forms and worksheets, to see the detailed information needed . (Less information is needed if all of last year was donated as cash to 50% charities).
Depending on the carryover amount, and what other allowed itemized deductions you have for this year, it may be possible that you will still be in the new Std Ded region for 2018...really depends on your situation.
Thank you. This is helpful. Starting with my file so I will have to enter manually.
