2022 Filing deadline for California taxpayers extended to November 16.

TurboTax program does not know this.

So I cannot efile anything.

Will I be able to efile ? I am not sure.

When will this get fixed ?

E-file ended on October 16th. You can print and mail your return.

I'm appalled that this is the case. I'm sure there are a lot of us in this situation. The IRS extended the deadline for us to file until November 16th, and TurboTax decided NOT to honor that by allowing us to e-file until November 16th. Unbelievable. It is after 6pm, and after spending 4 days trying to get around a glitch in Turbo Tax this year that wouldn't record my retirement contributions, it is now too late to mail anything. So I'm looking at a late filing penalty.  Thanks, folks.  Awesome.

there would be no late filing penalties if you do not have a balance due.

If you do not owe or are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due at the time you requested your extension.  If you still owe a balance, you can pay it on the IRS site and it will be timely, or if your envelope is postmarked, your mailed check or money order will be timely.

Southern Florida residents received a disaster extension to 1 May 2025 for 2023 returns if we filed a normal extension to October 2024:  IRS memorandum FL-2024-10, Oct. 11, 2024.

I tried to e-file on 16 Feb. 2025 and received the error message that I must print and mail. 

 

To make matters worse, it also included a penalty and interest that amounted to over 50% of the approximately $660 remaining due after timely paying before the October extension deadline an estimated payment due of over $15K.   A quick check with an IRS registered agent who is a friend of mine said NO, you should not owe and pay the amount TurboTax generated.  Just send in the actual tax due and wait for the IRS to add any (hopefully correct) interest .  So I had to go in and manually edit the pdf file for my 1040 and the payment voucher and then print and mail.

 

That is NOT what I paid for in purchasing TurboTax Home & Business 2023.

If you were preparing a 2023 return, e-filing is no longer available in TurboTax for that year. TurboTax e-filing supports the current tax year, which is 2024. You can prepare prior year returns but they will need to be mailed.

 

Taxpayers can elect to claim casualty losses that occurred in 2024 on their 2023 returns, which were already due before the disaster, so due dates for 2023 returns aren't affected by IRS relief for 2024 returns.

 

When the IRS allows extensions due to disaster relief, they are not changing the underlying law; therefore, tax software will still calculate any penalty that would otherwise be due.

 

The IRS can waive the underpayment penalty in the event of a natural disaster for which they are allowing relief. If you have been impacted by a federally declared disaster area, you can revisit the topic of Underpayment Penalties under Other Tax Situations and answer accordingly based on your situation.

 

In TurboTax, when you get to the question about Penalty Waivers, which includes disaster declarations, answer Yes. Answer Yes to whether you want to request a penalty waiver. TurboTax provides an entry field for an explanation to be included in your tax return as to why you qualify for a waiver of the penalty.

 

To further clarify, IRS Memorandum 2024-10 refers to Hurricane Milton that began on Oct. 5, 2024 and provides relief for return filings or payments due on or after Oct. 5, 2024 and before May 1, 2025 and extends the time for filing and payment to May 1, 2025.

That is not a helpful or useful option. It opens a place where comments can be added, but there is no indication where those comments are included on the tax return. It also does nothing whatsoever about recalculating so that the penalty still remains in calculations by turbo tax and therefore it indicates I owe about 50% more than it should by wrongly including the penalty instead of only about 1% more for late payment by 4 months. 

 

The instructions there are also indicate that a form with respect to the penalty can be filed but that form still indicates the wrong penalty. 

 

TurboTax does not do the correct thing, namely to reflect the actual ZERO penalty and only the correct late fee for taxes left to be paid and the due date authorized under the IRS disaster extension.

Yes, if you enter the explanation in Penalty Waivers, it will be included in your tax return.

 

Make sure you are referencing the correct IRS Memorandum. As noted before, IRS Memorandum 2024-10 refers to Hurricane Milton that began on Oct. 5, 2024 and provides relief for return filings or payments due on or after Oct. 5, 2024 and before May 1, 2025 and extends the time for filing and payment to May 1, 2025.
