6 digit IP PIN not accepted by TT Home & Business

I submitted my Federal Return with the 5 digit PIN used in previous years. It was rejected.

The TurboTax forms do not allow the 6 digit PIN from the IRS.

What can be done????

6 digit IP PIN not accepted by TT Home & Business

@Pduri In the File section of the program you are asked to enter a 5 digit self-selected PIN that is used when e-filing a tax return.  This PIN is not the 6 digit IP PIN you received from the IRS.

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

The 2023 TurboTax Deluxe e filing form field for the PIN is a maximum of 5 digits. The PIN provided by the IRS is 6 digits so I was not able to file electronically.

There are two types of PINs that one may have to deal with when e-filing with the IRS. There's a 5-digit pin and a 6-digit pin.

The 5-digit pin is your signature to "sign" the return. Typically, this pin does not change unless you consciously take physical action on the IRS website to change it. (Don't know if you can still do that either.)

The 6-digit pin is an identity protection pin. This pin *DOES* *CHANGE* every year, and the IRS will send you your new 6-digit pin each year, via the U.S. postal service to the address on your most recently filed tax return. or most recently filed IRS Form 8822-Change of Address from.
Instructions have already been provided earlier in this thread on how to enter the 6-digit identity protection pin.

This is the most helpful reply! The explanation that the two PINs differ and the 6-digit number is not related to the 5-digit number helped. And that if you have a 6-digit PIN, you *must* enter it where it belongs apart from the 5-digit filing numbers.

Here are the directions when you are using the TT Desktop version:

To enter your IP PIN in TTD > Select from the Tabs "Personal" (Not Personal Info) > "Other Tax Situations" > Scroll down to Other Return Info > Start/ Update Identity Protection PIN

Hope this helps, I had to call to get this information.

The thing not stated in these answers is that once you have entered the 6 digit PIN as other answers explain (in the Other Tax Situations menu), you still have to enter a 5 digit PIN for TT at the end, but it doesn't matter what you enter there. The 6 digit PIN will be used.

BUT another related problem I encountered was not explained. My spouse had gotten a new PIN through the mail and I entered it when asked, the first time through. But I did not know that the IRS had also issued a new PIN to me, and never sent a letter.  (Even though I had previously requested mail notifications). I had to go into the IRS website (if you don't have an account that is a hassle) to find my new 6 digit PIN after my e-file was rejected twice.

Apparently if anyone on your return has had a new PIN issued, everyone signatory on your return will need one.

I hope Intuit will fix the field for the PIN to eliminate this confusion and accept the 6 digits.
