If this is for services that you performed with an intent to make money, and it's reported in Box 7 as Nonemployee Compensation, then it is considered business income by the IRS and is subject to Self-Employment Tax.
Not sure I understand your dilemma. I just wen thru a 1099 misc and didn't find a business option. Where are you getting hung up?
I have tried doing my taxes twice ever time I put in my 1099misc the program keeps asking for business information. When I delete the form and try again I have the same problem.
It is a legal service offered to retiree if they need to use it .
