We have a 20 year old college student who goes to school out of state (we are in TN, she is in NC), We have claimed her as a dependent on our taxes. She is filing taxes because of her scholarship income exceeding her tuition (by about $15K) She also has a job in NC while she is at school, as well as a summer job in TN. Does she need to file in NC as well (TN has no state income tax) and, if, so, would it just be for her part time NC job (less than $5K).

No return needed. You are in TN and you claim her so she is a resident of TN. She is temporarily in NC for college. She is a nonresident of NC.
She would need to file a NC nonresident return for her NC income, if her income was over $12,750 for TY 2024.

Thank you for your response. Something I am still unclear about. She is filing taxes for the taxable portion of her scholarship so that we are able to receive the AOTC credit with our taxes. With that counting as an income, let's say $15000, plus $4000 from summer job, and $3000 from school year job, wouldn't that put her @ $22000 requiring her to file taxes?
Yes, she would file federal. I read your question as filing NC. I am sorry about that!
Thank you! I was actually inquiring about both, but didn't make myself very clear. I appreciate your help.
