TurboTax program states, "Let us finish your taxes for just $40 per state." But if I continue and select states, the price charged per state is $45. Why the discrepancy?

Are you in CA? Are you choosing to pay your TurboTax fees by having the fees deducted from your federal refund? If you are using desktop software---which is what you are posting from--- your Home and Business software includes the software to prepare returns for one specific state. If you need an additional--other--state--there is a fee to download the additional state software. There is a $25 state e-filing fee which you can avoid if you print and mail the state. BUT if you choose to pay that state fee from your federal refund you are also agreeing to a $45 "refund processing fee" on top of every other fee. Avoid it by mailing your state returns.
Are you in California? Yes CA is $45. But you know that is in addition to the $25 to efile a state return. That is the processing service charge to have the $25 deducted from your federal refund. You should try to pay the $25 state efile fee upfront with a credit card and avoid the extra $45. Go back through the file tab slowly and read all the screens closely.
No - Not in CA. I am referring to the TurboTax fee for use of the state products - not the TurboTax filing fee to file a state return. When going from the Federal section to State, the screen shows a fee of $40 per state. On the next screen when I actually try to select states, however, the fee jumps to $45 per state. (I need to download OK and KS.)
And completely agree with y'all - I always mail in any state returns and don't file them thru TT. Not worth the added filing fee.
Or I think you mean you need to buy an extra state program download for a different state? Yes that is $45. You get 1 free state program. Then if you need to file in another state you need to buy that state's program. The prices usually increase on March 1 from 40 to 45. Same with the state efile fee from $20 to 25. Maybe they didn't change the first place where it says $40.
