Hopefully the IRS does something to reverse these erroneous returns. Fortunately for me I normally owe so there is no refund that's being held up. Unfortunately for those anticipating a refund it may be a long while before they see that. As I said though hopefully the IRS will release some type of tool similar that will let people retract their previous return if it was done in error. I personally just went ahead and electronically paid what I owe on official payments, so that they are paid well in advance. Keep in mind also that you actually have 3 years to amend a return, so technically as long as you're not missing a refund and you pay what you owe then you have plenty of time to rectify this.
[===]
you don't have three years to amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
If you overpaid, you get a refund.
you always have to file by the due date. For mailing, it is the postmarked date that counts.
If you filled out the non-filer form it generated a simple 1040, that's why you can't e-file because of a duplicate SS#. When you look up the return it says accepted, so one has been filed correct? W That is correct that only FILED returns have the 3 year period. I didn't overpay, I paid what was owed. I had this amount way before I filled out the non-filer from turbotax.
@CA07 when you used the portal was a 1040 form given to you ? did you make a copy ?
I did the same thing. I didn't know I could file after I did that.
Hi so should I file for an extensions and wait till july 15th or later to send paper return since I did a non file form on accident? Or can I send it anytime?
According to Wall St Journal your mailed return will go into a trailer in the IRS processing center parking lot.
What it said was if you have not filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return or are not required to file a tax return. Use non filers. Two weeks ago it did not have additional information.
Thanks for the info! This was literally the only helpful information I could find on the internet. My question for you is how is this mistake that I've made going to affect my stimulus money? Does the IRS still have the information that they need in order for me to receive my check? Also, when do you suggest mailing in my tax return and 1040X? I see a lot of people on this forum suggesting that we should not mail it until July.
When you do the non filer form.
Does that file a return for you for 2018 or 2019.
I did the non filer one for my husband cause we were not married for 2018.
I filed our 2019 taxes as married on march 22nd.
But for me when I click get your payment to add bank info it did not have my adjusted income for 2019 due to the return not processed yet. So I had to enter my 2018 agi.
and of course hubby was a bf with 0 income for 2018. Hope I did not make a huge mistake for him on clicking and filing the non filer form. I did this like 30 minutes ago. Can anyone help.
Its ok got my answer. They rejected his return since I have aleady filed one married.
Odd that when I clicked the get my payment they did not have my 2019 info.
I thought I was filling out a 2018 non filer form bc I hadn’t completed this years taxes yet. I did it in hopes of having my bank info on file for the direct deposits and now I see that it’s for 2019 and I can’t submit my 2019 taxes. I’ve called IRS and they aren’t answering questions for this matter. I’m currently laid off and freaking out. What do I need to do??
@Jhennesja have you read through any of this thread ?
Go ahead and log back into non filer. When you get to form up top click clear form then
at bottom it will say are you sure you want to delete this click yes. That is what I did.
Then wait and go into get my payment ... but wait for a while til you are confirmed that has happened.. You may even have to wait a few days. I hope this helps.
