Your paid family leave from California is reported on a Form 1099-G or may appear on your Form W-2. It is entered into TurboTax when you enter your forms into the program.
Paid Family Leave (PFL) income is taxable on your federal return, but not taxable on your California State return if either of the following situations apply:
If your PFL is reported on a W-2, you must enter the amount (if any) that was paid by an insurance company, and not your employer.
If none of the amount was paid by an insurance company, and all of it was paid by your employer, you must enter $0 in the wages box because any amount reported by your employer in box 16 of a W-2 is considered compensation for services or taxable fringe benefits in California.
Form 1099G reports the total taxable income we issue you in a calendar year. The EDD reports this income to the IRS. As taxable income, these payments must be reported on your federal tax return, but they are exempt from California state income tax.
If you have a Paid Family Leave (PFL) claim or you are unable to access your information online, you can request a copy of your Form 1099G by calling the automated Self-Service Line at 1-866-333-4606. A copy of your Form 1099G will be mailed to you.
