Sadly, my cousin passed away this year at only 42.
TT says you're not allowed to file a PA final return?
Per his 1 and only W2, he paid all his PA state taxes and owes zero and is owed zero (no refund).
Can someone please confirm that means take NO action, just NO PA return and no further action?
Thank you!
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Go back to the PA interview questions. Say NO to the final return. Then you can go back to forms mode. It will still show as deceased on the return. The final return is for someone moving out of the state. Marking it as deceased is all you need to do.
No, there are no extra forms to fill out.
If you are submitting it electronically, there is no signature at all.
If you are mailing it in, then you would sign it as the executor noting that you are the executor.
No. You would still file his final return and mark the box that says deceased on the PA 40. Where does TurboTax say you cannot file a final PA return?
The fiduciary (executor, administrator, or other person charged with caring for the decedent's property) must file the tax return for an individual who died during the tax year. The fiduciary files the return as "Deceased," and reports all income the decedent received from the beginning of the tax year to the date of death. Any return filed for a deceased individual must show the date of death on the appropriate line. Brief Overview and Filing Requirements
Thank you!
I'll try to find in the TT interviews where it said that and take a screen shot.
I'll get back with you on this!
So are there additional forms to fill out to let them know this is the final PA return?
Would the executor sign the PA-40?

Do you need to include any legal forms showing you are the executor if the PA return is mailed in?
I hear I could go to the courthouse and obtain a "short form" that states I'm the executor?
Thank you!
Yes. If you are mailing in your return, you will need to include the Short form that states you are the executor. You are correct, you should be able to get this from the courthouse.
