I may be forced to use the online version of TT because I do not want to discard my Windows 10 PC. I only want to do one return (apparently this is a system limit??), and I can store returns etc on my desktop (I don't care if they also keep a copy in the cloud).
can somebody tell me what (other) functionality or performance i might lose with a move do online? (I can also install one of the modified versions of 11 that can work on an older machine (without the security chip), but I dont see the need to do this for any other reason.)
thanks in advance

I had a 1983 Volvo 240 wagon and then a 1997 V90. Now I have a Subaru Outback.
If you used the Desktop program before you may notice several differences and not like the online version. It has less features and no Forms Mode. The Online versions don't have all the same forms so you might have to upgrade to a higher Online version. You can only do 1 return. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done. In case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
You will be able to transfer from 2024 on your computer to the Online version next year. So be sure to have the data file ending in .tax2024 and make backups.
The Online web version is only good for one account and one return. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts. You can log in and access your return from any computer. You only can see the forms after you pay and download the pdf. And you might need to upgrade to a higher version to enter different kinds of income. And you can add LIVE service or Full Service for expert help. In Online the fees are to prepare the federal and state returns (State is a separate charge) whether you efile or print and mail. Efiling is free and included. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax20xx data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done in case you need to amend in the future or if you need a copy to get a loan or something. You might not be able to access your online return when you need a copy.
Thanks so much for the quick and comprehensive response. it seems like the online version is norticeably inferior to desktop.
i tend to work in forms mode a lot - sometimes, just to trace things back the source efficiently. offhand, this sounds like time to install a pseudo-win 11 on the desktop.
i became a TT customer in 2021 when TaxCut absolutely refused to install on my desktop after something like 20 years of acceptable performance... although TT has a far nicer user interface and accessible tech support people.
separately, what Volvo do you drive? i still wish i had gotten a 544 or 122 (or even a P1800) a zillion years ago.
