If I owe taxes what would b the best option to go about making a payment

You can mail a check in with the payment voucher that will print for the IRS and/or your state, or you can pay online with the IRS by clicking here:https://www.irs.gov/payments

To pay your state online you can visit your state's department of revenue website.

So if I owe state and federal and chose to do the check option would I have to get two separate checks or one check

Federal and state are completely separate.  So you need to send 2 checks one to each place.  If you mail them be sure to get a tracking number from the post office so you have proof they got them.
