The regulations you list are for the State of California. You may be able to claim your parent as a dependent on your federal tax return if you are filing single if they earned less than $4,400 (excluding social security benefits) and you provided over half of their support. You saying I can claim my dad as a dependent for the federal not for state of California? I'm confused as last time I asked a question regarding this they said I could claim for both state and federal but in double checking the qualifications again I noticed the other bullets for CA. Although the verbiage in the State of California instructions are confusing, TurboTax does allow the dependent exemption for a parent if you file as single, which logic would dictate is correct. So, it seems to be TurboTax's position that the exemption would be allowed in your case. Also, TurboTax guarantees the accuracy of the calculations on your return, so as long as you answer the questions regarding your parent accurately, you will be protected from any adverse ruling regarding the dependent classification by the State of California.
