This is my first time filing, so please bear with me. I'm an expat as an US citizen, so I'm automatically given an extension until June 15th. I just submitted my return and it got rejected due to my husband's dummy SSN. He is not a US citizen nor does he live in the US as we both reside in Germany. I cannot type in NRA. It keeps asking me to enter a valid SSN and then I'm able to re-file online, but not by mail. I need to send by mail after fixing the SSN part to NRA. It's just not letting me to choose that option because I have some payment due which I already paid the same time I filed.
I also paid TurboTax $70 to use their service because it's a self employment tax and not W2, and I feel like I'm being ripped off if they're not doing this job right. I also tried to contact support, but they can only accept calls. The problem is, I'm deaf and need to communicate via texting.
Please help.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You will need to print out the return and then use whiteout on the dummy social security number and use a pen to put in NRA. Then sign and mail the return. Do not attempt to efile at all.
Please let us know exactly what payment is being asked for so we can try to resolve or explain that issue.
First, you paid for preparation. E-filing is never guaranteed, and often beyond Turbotax's control. You can still use the return you paid to prepare by printing and mailing it.
Second, even if you could e-file, you would be considered late unless you obtained the normal extension online before April 15. To claim the automatic overseas extension, you must file by mail and attach a written explanation. See the instructions here.
So what you need to do is, use the dummy SSN to pass the program checks, then print your return. Cover the dummy SSN with some white-out (or black it out I suppose), and then write "NRA" on the line where it says "If treating a nonresident alien spouse as a resident, enter their name here" (this is a slight update from older instructions). (See picture.). Then mail the package to the IRS, probably using a shipping service with tracking and proof of delivery.
