Or do you mean you need to change your product edition instead of the Self-Employed Edition?
Do you have any self-employment income and expenses, or independent contracting, sole proprietor? Did you receive a 1099-MISC or cash income for your work? Did you have a self-employed business in 2018 and no longer had the business in 2019?
Or did you end up in the Self-Employed Edition by mistake?
Self-employed is not a filing status. You can prepare and file any tax return with TurboTax Self-Employed, even if you are not self-employed.
Do you mean that you want to switch to a less-expensive edition of TurboTax Online? If so, see the FAQ at the link below. But the only reason to switch to a different edition is to save money on the TurboTax fees. If you do not have self-employment income, switching will not make any difference in your tax return or your refund. You cannot switch to a less-expensive edition and keep information that you have already entered. The only way to switch is to clear your tax return and start over.
Can I downgrade to a lower-priced version of TurboTax Online?
Thanks!
I have not been self-employed since 2020, how can I change it?
To clarify
Were you filing Schedule C?
Did you have any business assets?
Were you using a vehicle and claiming any mileage or actual expenses for that vehicle?
Did you close out the business?
I accidentally checked the box for self employed (I am not) to employee. Can’t find where to change that !?!
No, I don’t have self employment
Yes, but it was only a small amount of money…do I need to add it ? Or, can I add it next year ?
I ended up in self employment edition by mistake
If you want to downgrade from Self Employed, follow these steps.
In order to downgrade, you will need to make sure you have not paid any fees to TurboTax yet.
You will need to clear and start over to downgrade.
How to downgrade TurboTax to a lower level
@Diane68
please I need to change my filling status single head of the household. i no longer have business
See the instructions in this FAQ to take care of the business you no longer have.
To change your filing status, return to the Personal Info section and change it there. If you are using TurboTax Online, click on My Info from the left side menu. Click Edit next to your Marital Status on that page and TurboTax will update your filing status after going through the Head of Household qualifier questions.
You need a qualifying dependent entered to qualify for Head of Household status. @fareef
I have been searching fruitlessly thru all the "Help" options on the TT website & it's related sites. The only answer I can find for changing my filing product is to START OVER! TurboTax is SUPPOSED to be a wonderful, user-friendly product that helps people do their taxes quickly & efficiently. For a MAJOR tax preparation company to require its customers to start over rather than be able simply to click a button is UNACCEPTABLE! Since TT employs a team of experts to make & manage their software & this should be an easy fix, I can only come to the conclusion that you have CHOSEN not to fix this problem. It appears to me to be a simple case of corporate GREED! You let the customer do all their work & be ready to file, then you give them an untenable choice. They can either pay for the unnecessary service or blow out all their information & start over. I'm sure that this forces most people to pay for the upgrade that they don't want or need so that they can get their money quicker & save time.
I went with another company in 2020. I didn't like them so I came back to TurboTax. I will call Customer Service on Monday (this is the weekend & they aren't open). If they can't help me do this very simple change & tell me that I have to start over or pay the extra fee, I will start over. I'll start over with ANOTHER company! We'll also be sure to tell all our friends & acquaintances to be careful so that TurboTax doesn't cheat them like they tried to cheat us!
