My wife and I got married in 2024, and we will be filing jointly this year. Since her last name was different on the 2024 w-2 would that be an issue when filing?

No, that will not be an issue when filing your tax return. However, it is very important that the Social Security numbers are exactly the same on the W-2 as your Social Security card.

On your tax return, input her name and Social Security Number precisely as is on her current Social Security card.

So her name on the SSN is her new last name but the SSN is the same.

But on her W-2 the last name would be different, based on what you are saying I should be in the clear.

if she wants to change to her married name she'll have to go through the Social Security Adm. They could issue her a new SSN.  To prevent an issue when filing the 2025 return in 2026, she must update the info on the new card with her employer.

Since the new name is on the Social Security card, you are fine to file. The name does need to be changed at work through the HR department. If you want to request a corrected w-2 from work with the new last name, you can. They may or may not issue a new form. As long as they correct the name in their records for the future, you are find. The IRS understands people get married and change names.

Did you both use Turbo Tax last year?

You can not transfer from or combine 2 returns or accounts. Just pick the return for the spouse that has the most complicated return to enter or has any depreciation or business or more investments. Or use the account/return for whoever you want to be listed first going forward (by the way you can not change the order of the names). Then add the other spouse's name, ssn and info to it.

But if you want to keep the prior accounts separate from the new Joint account then start a new account. Online is only good for one return per account. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.
