My TurboTax fees are listed as $182, however, the expanded itemized list totals $138. Why is there a discrepancy and how can it be corrected?

The difference between the two figures makes me wonder:  Did you choose the option to pay TurboTax fees out of your Federal refund?  If so, there is an additional 39.99 service fee (44.99 for California filers.)

If that's your situation, have you already filed?  If not, we can tell you how to remove that "pay-out-of-refund" option and pay upfront with credit/debit card to avoid that service fee.

So could this be your situation?

  • A Premier Federal return at $89.
  • A state return at $49.
  • Did you choose to pay out of the Federal refund?   39.99 (or 44.99 California)
  • Plus possible sales tax.

If that doesn't explain it, did you by any chance add the optional MAX Benefits?

Thank you very much! That adds up. I did select to pay out of my return, and I am in CA. Fortunately, I have not yet filed. I wanted to get this figured out first. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how to easily change to pay with credit card.

Thank you!

You're welcome!

In California, the option to pay the fees out of the Federal refund is included in Premium Services Bundle at 44.99.    So you first have to remove Premium Services using the steps in the second FAQ below.

Just for info, here is what is in the Premium Services Bundle:

If you haven't filed, you should be able to remove it.  To remove the $45 fee you have to first remove Premium Services, and then pay your product fees upfront with credit/debit card or a prepaid debit card you can buy in store.  See the following:
