The tax data file has a file extension of .taxyyyy, where yyyy is the tax year of the file, eg .tax2020 for tax year 2020.  The tax data file can only be opened by the TurboTax software for the year of the data file.

If you only need to view the tax return then download the PDF of the tax return.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents click on Show.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

One other thing.  IF you can download it, but it won't open properly... then....along with:

1)  requiring the Desktop software being installed before opening it on your computer.

also

2)  You have to start a separately-named dummy tax file first in the desktop software, to install any & all state software sets that were being used in the original  .taxyyyy  datafile.  You can't open that tax file until the proper state(s) are installed first.
